Mariel is the administrative coordinator with 21CC. In 2016, she received her BA in English Language and Literature at the University of Maryland, College Park. In her final undergraduate year, she was a mentor at Northwestern High School, where she guided students in semester-long literacy projects designed to creatively develop personal agency and voice regarding social issues, such as incarceration’s effect on the nuclear family. Her undergraduate independent study focused on the injustices experienced by non-Native English-speaking school children within the United States, ranging from teacher indifference to the delicate balance of preserving heritage while conforming to America’s image of success. Currently, Mariel is pursuing a graduate degree and training in competitive Olympic weightlifting.
