Kathy Szlavecz is a soil scientist who investigates interactions between the soil and organisms that live in it or above it (such as fungus, earthworms, and trees), and how outside influences, such as changed precipitation patterns or the introduction of invasives species, affect the health of the soil and the native organisms it supports. She uses physical sensors in the soil to gather data, and computer modeling.
